San Evaristo to Puerto Escondido: May 2 to May 6, 2023, 69 Nautical Miles We sailed from San Evaristo to Puerto Los Gatos on May 2, which is about 28 nautical miles.  Puerto Los Gatos has beautiful pink and red rocks on the north side of the bay.   It’s on the Baja Peninsula but is uninhabited.    When we got there, there was a large group of sea kayakers that were kayaking from Loreto to La Paz with the help of a tour guide and a couple of power boats.   We went snorkeling in the bay and saw a lot of different types of fish.   On May 4, we left Los Gatos and sailed about 18 miles to Agua Verde.    Agua Verde is a larger fishing town than San Evaristo and has two beach restaurants, a fairly well stocked tienda, and goat herds that they use to make fresh goat cheese (it was delicious!).    Agua Verde restaurant - huge & tasty fish tacos for $2! It’s a popular anchorage due to its beauty, good snorkeling, beautiful water, and hiking opportunities.  A whale came into the bay one

Book Report: Sea of Cortez by John Steinbeck

John and I are buddies now.  I believe it would be difficult for anyone to spend time with the man and not feel the same way.  His way of seeing the world is friendly and genuine.  His company is comfortable. John describes a boat trip.  I don't recall if he or one of his shipmates organized the trip.   I suspect he was invited along to document the whole thing.  He is a legendary writer, after-all. They started in California, and they motored to Cabo.  Then they started collecting animals at low tide from numerous beaches and rocky shores for science.  They kept anemones, starfish, regular fish, clams...for science.  They observed Native American and Mexican culture along the Baja Peninsula.  The dinghy outboard sucked.  In summary, the book went on about a bunch of guys on a boat poking around in tidal pools enjoying nature.  In 1940.  During the narrative, John conveyed the idea of teleological thinking.  It's a difficult word to say, but the concept is relevant to the pursu

Sea of Cortez La Paz to San Evaristo:   51 Nautical Miles La Paz to Caleta Partida April 26 through May 2, 2023   Our first anchorage out of La Paz was Caleta Partida, which was about 21 miles from La Paz on the north side of Espirtu de Santo.   Unfortunately, we didn’t stop at any of the beautiful beaches and anchorages on Espirtu de Santo partly due to our schedule but also due to the Corrumels ; the corrumels are westerly winds that are pretty strong this time of year and it makes western facing anchorages pretty uncomfortable.   Caleta Partida provide excellent protection from the nightly corumels; it’s actually located on the north side of Espirtu de Santo and on the south side of Isla Partida. The water, which is typical for most the anchorages in the Sea of Cortez, was various shades of turquoise blue – it’s incredible.   I saw a sea turtle – one of my favorites! - swimming next to our boat shortly after anchoring.   Caleta Partida Anchorage  Island Vegetation - Note:
