We've been "living" in La Cruz for the last month & I have loved it! It is a small town but has a huge boating community with several hundred boats in the marina & another 50 boats in the anchorage nearby. The diversity of boats and boaters is cool - there are multi-million dollar yachts (like ours 😉) & boats that are barely worth their yearly marina fees but still are floating. Many of the boaters are live-aboards like us, some are racers & sail almost every day, some are preparing to go to the south Pacific or circumnavigate the globe, and others never leave the dock. There are quite a few families with babies, kids, and teenagers, and a wide age range of boat owners from young couples in their 20's to cruisers over 80. Yet we all have a common thread of owning a boat. There are quite a few powerboats for fishing, going fast, & booze-cruises; many of the large powerboats are worked on daily by local workers, like constant cleaning, engine work, etc. but what's crazy is that they rarely go out. I almost wonder if the boats & the constant seemingly unnecessary maintenance is for money laundering...
The marina has activities almost daily, ranging from free movies outside on Thursday night, demonstrations on various boating equipment, sail races, games, & presentations from world renowned sailors (e.g., this one lady in her 70's has the record for the oldest person circumnavigating the world non-stop unassisted - super cool). With all the activities and new people we're meeting, I feel like I'm at summer camp for adults!
We've met some really interesting people - much cooler people than Tom and me (which may not be saying much 😄)! One cruiser is an Australian woman that operates a non-profit veterinarian clinic from her boat. She sails to small towns in Mexico and organizes free spay & neuter clinics. She also helped revive a sick sea turtle that was on our dock. Her website is https://www.vettails.com/ & she accepts donations to help keep her boat & clinic going - it's a great cause!
One of the things I like about La Cruz is that I can walk to town & get locally grown fresh fruit and veggies every day. The fish market at the marina has fresh seafood & the carnicerias have meat (although honestly I haven't been eating a lot of meat - plus the carnicerias are a little too "authentic" for me) . If you like live music, La Cruz is a great town for that too. The market in the marina on Sundays is huge and has everything from fresh bread, pastries, crepes, vegan food to jewelry, clothes, paintings, baskets, and leather goods.
